RMBO MOUNTAIN PLOVER PROJECTMountain
Plovers, a species of high conservation concern, have once again
returned to the plains of eastern Colorado. Due to their dependence on
bare ground for nesting, Mountain Plovers are often attracted to
cultivated land. Depending on the timing or farm implements being used
to work the land, nests can be lost or damaged. Rocky Mountain Bird
Observatory (RMBO), in cooperation with the Colorado Division of
Wildlife, offers a voluntary program called the Mountain Plover Nest
Conservation in Cultivated Fields Program. RMBO biologists will survey
fields and mark nests with lath or flags, making the nests more visible
during cultivation. Landowners are then provided with a map of the
nest locations, so nests can be avoided during cultivation. Nests only
need to be missed by inches. These voluntary efforts can make a
difference in the conservation of this species and will help show how
non-regulatory efforts can promote species conservation on private
lands. To participate in the 2008 Mountain Plover Nest Conservation in
Cultivated Fields Program or to learn more, please contact Kathy
Draznik at 303-659-4348 extension 11.
Operation HomefrontOperation Homefront provides emergency
services and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind,
and to wounded warriors when they return home. Springtime is
relocation season for many military families, and young mothers are
often relocating their children and households alone, while their
service member is deployed to a combat zone. Find out how you can help
these military families and ease the minds of our deployed troops.
